A New Way to Enjoy Beer – LouEddie’s Pizza and Brewery

LouEddie’s Pizza and Brewery, which is popular for its fire-roasted artisan pizzas, continues with nonstop evolution at its restaurant. Recently, LouEddie’s introduced its new beer garden, perfect for the summer months ahead of us.

Lou York, owner of LouEddie’s, emphasized the importance of the current changes, saying that it is an interest to the local community and tourists.

The beer garden is something that York and her team have been working hard to create. The brewers at LouEddie’s are continually working to master the craft and create beer that is enjoyable and just the right taste. Currently, LouEddie’s offers two house beers: Amber Wood Ale and Backwoods Porter.

The beer garden, which is located outside on the lower level of the restaurant by Willow Woods Park, has open seating, with shade from trees and flowers all around, a small waterfall and patio lights that top it all off.

“This is what Eddie would have wanted us to do,” York said, acknowledging that she continues to strive to accomplish the goals that Eddie Hillary had. Hillary and York ran the successful business together for the first couple of years after the restaurant’s opening and, together, helped bring LouEddie’s a lot of success. However, in September 2015, Hillary was airlifted out of the restaurant and “never came back,” York reflected. “We’ve finally been able to get there,” she added.

Showing the success of its brewing, York mentioned that LouEddie’s has been invited to participate in the ninth annual Lake Arrowhead Brewfest which takes place in August. York went on to say that being invited to this event is an honor and a real accomplishment for LouEddie’s. Going off numbers from past years, Brewfest is estimated to include approximately 1,500 people in attendance.

Although the team was in the beginning stages of brewing last year, current brew masters Hunter Goniea and Sven Peterson have dedicated their time to refining their craft.

The brewing room is visible from the downstairs saloon, and the brew itself takes about 10 hours to complete, after which the ingredients inside the keg ferment for approximately two to three weeks. To brew the beer, Goniea and Peterson use grains like hops, which are basic ingredients, as well as barley.

To add to the brewing experience, LouEddie’s still offers its beer-brewing classes, which are based on the theory and methodologies of microbrewing. Classes are by appointment only.

The class is usually about five hours and, for $75, includes pizza and beer. It is an ideal class for families and groups of friends to spend valuable time together.

On Tuesdays, down at the Saloon, LouEddie’s offers guests live music, and live brewing, which means that people have the opportunity to interact with the brewers and get to know more about the process.

With more plans for expansion, York mentioned that the team is currently working on opening the 100-year-old cabin that is at the front of Willow Woods Park. The cabin will be used as the microbrewery room, meaning that the brewing process will be moved, giving the team more space. “It will be used for manufacturing, but also customer interaction,” York explained. The process of opening the cabin is just two steps away from completion. “We will be able to expand our current system and have more kegs and refrigeration.”

Brewer Hunter Goniea said that being immersed in the brewing process has really helped him grow as a person and that through it, he found a passion for creating new things.

“Working here is always a new experience,” he commented, adding that he thoroughly enjoys the beer-making process.

Being very business oriented, York further explained how she is dedicated to finding new trends for LouEddie’s, having her staff master the trend, and then passing it onto them. It is all about making a part of the business their own, she went on to say. “It’s a way I can help them platform an interest.”

For Goniea, York has done just that. After hours and hours of training, Goniea became very comfortable with the brewing process and is now fully hands-on and continually thinking of new ways to expand the brewing business for LouEddie’s.

“My ultimate goal is to make great beer on the mountain and see the business grow,” Goniea voiced. “I also would like to bring in new faces to the brewing process and teach them everything that I have learned.”

For York, her goal is to continue with the success of the restaurant and ensure that her team is advancing in the business, as well.

Without the staff, York highlighted that none of what has happened for LouEddie’s would be possible. “They all have support around them. We look at people’s strengths, and we work as a team,” she concluded.

In addition to the pizza, the saloon, and the microbrewery, weddings are also offered at Willow Woods Park, which is located directly behind the restaurant. The weddings are themed as pizza/brewery weddings.
