Since 1943, the name Herington has been known around the mountain. To this day the name continues to provide to the mountain communities, specifically in the Crestline area.

What is now known as Herington Real Estate (Herington), was known as multiple other things in the past. It all began in 1943 when Cliff Herington and his wife moved up to the mountain from Herington, Kan., after World War II. The Heringtons were used to vacationing in Colorado during the summer and loved the environment there. When they discovered the mountain, they could not resist.

It started off as Cliff’s Trading Post in 1943; in 1955 it went through a transition and became a general store. Everything from souvenirs, apparel, winter accessories and more was available at the general store. The business remained successful for some time, but in 1963 the new four-lane highway at the top of Top Town played a large role in reconstructing the way the market worked.

“That’s when it became the general store of real estate,” said Tiffany Herington. “My father got into painting and construction, which ultimately led to the real estate part of the business.”

In 1978 the general store closed down, leaving the real estate aspect as a stand alone. It ran for some time with the same name, until 1993 when the family decided the name needed to be changed.

This was when the Heringtons developed their new name, business and branding. “Our family was well established up here,” Tiffany said. Herington has been serving the mountain for many years now. They are a small real estate business that helps hopeful homeowners find a home that suits them, mainly in Crestline.

Inside of Herington is a story. Decor brought from Herington, Kan.—like old radios, paintings, photos and more—tell the story of the Herington family. The history of the family is seen and felt throughout the entire place. Cliff Herington Sr. still goes to work every single day; he remains passionate about his business. His children, Tiffany and Cliff Jr., work alongside their dad, and plan to continue Herington Real Estate as long as they can. “It’s truly a family business; it has always been family owned,” Tiffany said.

Though Herington focuses on finding homes in Crestline, it has made some sales in Lake Arrowhead, Running Springs and even Big Bear. “Crestline remains our main focus, though,” Tiffany said.

After becoming owners of the building they are currently in, the Heringtons decided to purchase the spaces next to them. These spaces are now occupied by stores like My Favorite Things, Encompass, Rusty Bucket and Sara’s Antiques & Atelier. Herington is proud to rent out its spaces to these business owners, and maintains a low monthly rent to ensure the businesses continue to be a success.

“We like to keep a reasonable rent so people can continue running a business up here,” Tiffany said. Herington has been a big contributor to the Rediscover Crestline events that have been occurring in Top Town, and will continue to participate with the Top Town Christmas Open House Nov. 26. The event will go from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Herington will host four local artisans, and will be open for business as well.
