Orthodontic Specialist Dr. Philip Matthew Nisco has been committed to providing his clients with bright healthy smiles since he opened his practice in Fountain Valley in 1986, and began on the mountain in 1988. Dr. Nisco attended the University of California Irvine, and then went on to the University of California Los Angeles School of Dentistry and, upon graduation from there, received specialty training at the University of Connecticut.

Even though at the time his main practice was in Fountain Valley, Nisco mentioned that he spent a lot of time with his wife on the mountain during the weekends. He liked the area and, when the opportunity for him to begin working up here presented itself, he took it right away.

“It was during the time when Loma Linda owned the hospital, and I was invited to share a multi-specialty office [at the hospital],” he shared. “So I started my practice from scratch.”

After 10 years at that location, Nisco began to notice that he was outgrowing it. His client numbers were going up, and the need for a bigger, better space was necessary.

He found the ideal location in Lake Arrowhead Village, where he is still. “I built my dream office here.” Nisco went on to express the gratitude he felt toward local dentists who were continually recommending him to their clients. “The local dentists were happy to have an orthodontist in town.”

Individuality is the key to the work that Dr. Nisco and his staff perform. He said that they are aware that every patient is different, and every person needs individualized care for his or her teeth. He is also known for providing successful orthodontic care for patients with special needs, as well as physical and mental disabilities.

Dr. Nisco offers a variety of options when it comes to aligning teeth. However, with advanced technology, Nisco co-developed a system that deals with 3D scans and prints of your teeth. Orchestrate 3D allows the orthodontist to scan your teeth, design the movements, and print the model to create clear aligners.

“There is no mold involved in this process,” Nisco emphasized. “People have said that they feel more comfortable wearing the aligners.”

He added that the scanning takes about three minutes to complete, and from then on he designs the process every step of the way.

“This method is used by orthodontic specialists who are the ones making the decision, based upon judgment from their training experience,” he went on to explain.

Since introducing clear aligners to his patients, Nisco has seen that more adults are now feeling more comfortable with aligning their teeth. They are no longer required to wear the metal braces if the work that needs to be done is for mild to moderate crowding and spacing, combination braces/aligner therapy, finishing fixed cases and relapse cases, or for long-term retention.

“The demographics have changed,” Nisco stated. “I have started to treat more adults now,” adding that he used to treat 95 percent children, but now that percentage has shifted to 70 percent, with 30 percent adults.

The clear aligners take more responsibility because they must be worn for 22 hours a day, which is why they are a good option for adults. “With adults, we used to just do clear braces, but now they have a choice.”

Dr. Nisco and his staff continue to expand their knowledge in the advances of orthodontics. The goal is to continue providing customized care to his patients, leaving them with a healthy, happy smile.
