It was 20 years ago when Mike Nolan, owner of Home Defenders in Rimforest, found himself outside in the San Bernardino National Forest picking out a spot where he would place a tent. Just before that time, he was living in a cabin in Valley of the Moon in Crestline and investing his ‘everything’ into his start-up business, when the State of California got his license paperwork fouled up in the system. Nolan thought he would lose it all.

“The state clogged up my license and I had to put it on hold,” Nolan explained. “I put everything into my business, which was a rookie mistake.”

This is what led Nolan to go into the forest to start looking for a place to live. “I’m going to live out here,” he said to himself, thinking that he was at the point of no return. But, before deciding to move a tent out into the forest, Nolan made one last call to the Structural Pest Control Board and left a message that resulted in a call that saved Nolan’s living situation — and his business.

“I got a call back from a lady, head of the board, who told me she would help me but that she wasn’t happy about it,” Nolan remembered, adding that she wasn’t happy due to his direct and, in his words, angry message. Nevertheless, the head of the board assisted him with his license and, within two days of that conversation, his license was sent by FedEx to his home in Valley of the Moon.

According to Nolan, his house was somewhat hidden from the street, so he knew that the FedEx truck would most likely miss his home while out on delivery. He kept an eye out during those days, watching, desperately in need of his license.

Nolan spotted the truck driving right past his house and ran out to flag down the driver. “Days after that, I had my business,” he commented.

The stress that Nolan felt and the insecure emotions of being scared and defeated are some that he said are common for first-time business owners. He would wake up every morning with a nervous knot in his stomach, unsure if he would be able to push past the struggle to success.

Twenty years later, Home Defenders is one of the largest service companies in the San Bernardino Mountains, according to Nolan.

In order to become successful, Nolan emphasized the importance of learning how to perform an array of services. “On the mountain, you have to do things well and know a wide variety of things,” he stated. This is why Home Defenders protects homes from insects, rodents, termites, spiders, small wildlife, and more. The team will also create a plan that will help with keeping homes pest-free for a longer period of time.

“Difficult challenges put me to the test, but it’s what I needed to learn, to gain more skills,” Nolan concluded.

Home Defenders is located at 26375 Pine Ave. in Rimforest. For more information, call (909) 337-8623.
