Upon speaking with Dave and Sheri Longeuay, owners of Crystal Clear Hearing Aids in Blue Jay, Crestline and Anaheim, it is immediately obvious that they are passionate about what they do.

Their passion revolves around “helping people find solutions to hearing and also to involve the family of a person who is hearing impaired,” Sheri explained.

This, Dave noted, is because “There’s a big communication problem. The one [or people] who doesn’t have hearing loss is usually frustrated.”

But, once people get the hearing aids they need, Dave highlighted, “it just changes their life.”

One such story is that of a married couple. The husband had hearing loss, Sheri said, which resulted in a decline in the quality of life for them. They didn’t go out anymore because the husband couldn’t hear.

When he was fit with hearing aids, everything changed. “She was [crying with joy] and his whole demeanor, everything about him, was changed. He said, ‘I’ve taken my wife out three times to dinner since we saw you.’ She was just elated. She goes, ‘I have my husband back.’”

It’s these sorts of stories, Sheri revealed, that “are what it’s all about. It’s about connecting people back.”

Dave and Sheri have been connecting people on the mountain for just over two years since they opened their office in Lake Arrowhead Village. They moved locations and are now residing within the Blue Jay Mall, where their office hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday twice a month. Recently, they opened a satellite office in Crestline, in the Medical Plaza, which is open the first and third Saturdays of every month. The goal is to be on the mountain full-time by next year.

“We’re so happy to be able to bring hearing care up here to these fine people on the mountain,” Sheri expressed.

Dave added, “No more driving down the mountain for hearing aid adjustments. People love that.”

And, Sheri and Dave love the people on the mountain. “We just love this community so much, and the people here are golden,” Sheri noted.

Dave and Sheri have a long history on the mountain. They’ve been coming up for more than 30 years and own a home here. Dave said, “Arrowhead is our favorite place to be. We love the slower pace.”

Sheri added, “We’ve wanted to retire here. People here are different from down the hill. [On top of that], we’re getting such a great response from people.”

Helping people is a huge factor in why they’re both in business. But, Sheri went on to explain, “We’re also in this business because we both wearing hearing aids.”

Dave’s hearing loss is due to his background in audio engineering, recording live bands for 30 years at the studio that he owned. This resulted in tinnitus, which is a constant, incurable ringing in the ears.

For Sheri and Dave, that’s not a problem. Sheri acknowledged that they are tinnitus experts, and have a 90 percent success rate of “giving folks relief.” In Dave’s case, he said, “My tinnitus is 100 percent gone. I don’t have it when I wear my hearing aids.”

Sheri’s hearing loss comes from a number of factors, one of which is genetics. Her father and her brother both suffer from hearing loss. “I was also born with hearing loss, not really knowing how severe mine was.” This was aggravated by taking the popular pain reliever Advil, which has been proven to result in hearing loss when taken in large quantities over a long period of time. But, she said, “It’s only been in the last five years that I’ve been wearing hearing aids full-time. I should have been wearing them long before that.”

She continued, “That being said, I can empathize with people who are struggling with hearing.”

This is just one of the many elements that make Crystal Clear Hearing Aids stand out.

Other factors include that, “We’re not a franchise, we’re family owned. If you come to us, you’re going to get personalized care. You’re not supporting a big corporation, you’re supporting a family, a local business.”

Their hearing aids, Sheri said, are very affordable, with payment plans and accepting insurance. They’re Regal providers, the largest medical group for people on the mountain, according to Dave. They also accept Medi-Cal.

Another big element is the fact that they offer a free hearing test and demonstration of hearing aids. “Right on the spot,” he said, “we put hearing aids with your hearing loss.”

That’s not the only free service they provide. When you purchase hearing aids through the business, Sheri disclosed, “You get all of your services free for the life of the hearing aid. So, as long as the hearing aid lasts, we’re going to give you free service.”

This means that you will receive free hearing exams every year, as well as the update for the prescription on the hearing aids.

Dave stated that owning a hearing aid is “an ongoing process. So, when a person comes in, young or old, there’s a lot of information to take. We usually do several follow-ups. We see people periodically so we can help them maintain their hearing aids, keep them clean. Just...educate them.”

Although it can be a daunting process to have hearing aids for the first time, Dave and Sheri make the process as easy as possible. Dave shared, “One of the things we pride ourselves on: we don’t do the ‘hard sale.’ We’re very easy and welcoming. People come in and they feel relaxed. So we all get along great with our patients and it’s just a very easy, relaxed atmosphere. People enjoy coming here.”

And, Sheri concluded, that’s what the couple strives for. “We want them to come in and bring their wife, their daughter, their son. Let’s see if we can get people back into communicating with one another, and enjoying life together. You know?”
