PolaRotary Bear Plunge is one of the fundraising events introduced by the Rotary Club of Lake Arrowhead in 2009. A local non-profit service club affiliated to Rotary International, PolaRotary was introduced by past president Dr. Pat Rains dedicated to making an impact in our community by plunging into icy cold Lake Arrowhead and raising funds not only to the Rotary Club and also sharing the fundraising opportunity with other non-profit organizations to raise money for their causes.

“No wet suits, no nudity and complete immersion are the three rules for

PolaRotary Bear Plunge,” said Dr. Pat Rains. “Single jumpers or teams of

up to eight may jump to raise funds for the 501 (c) 3 charity of their

choice. Of the money raised by each team, 50% of the first $1,000 goes to Lake Arrowhead Rotary Foundation and 50% goes to the jumper’s charity. Money raised over $1,000 goes to the designated 501 (c) 3 charity.”

“Over the last 10 years, a total of $315,000 was raised for 70 charities,”

said Ron Doutt, PolaRotary Chair. “Over 10% of the fund was raised by Pat Rains alone. He delivered.”

The participation rate increased from 20 jumpers in 2009 to over 100 in recent years. Some of the participating organizations over the years included Rim Education Foundation, Mountain Bruins, Blue Jay Jazz Foundation, Arrowhead Arts Association, Lake Arrowhead Rotary Foundation, Wildhaven Ranch, Soroptimists, DOVES, Boys and Girls Club, Special Olympics, Mountain Sunrise Rotary, Crestline/Lake Gregory Rotary, Hearts and Lives, Meals on Wheels, Mountain Humane Society, Mountain Jewish Society, Rebuilding Together to name a few.

Jumping for Wildhaven Ranch this year is Coldwell Banker Sky Ridge Realty.

“Wildhaven Ranch and all the wild ones are thrilled at the idea of humans jumping into the icy cold lake for their animal friends! We will be sure to tell all our wild ones to join Steve Keefe and his agents when they make the big plunge,” said Diane Williams, director of Wildhaven Ranch.

“Our native wildlife needs his support and the support of the community to be a constant reminder that wild ones are a blessing to our mountain ecosystem,” added Diane Williams. “And the great value they bring of beauty, mystery, and preservation of our forest is important to all of us personally. Kudos to Steve for informing our residents of the rescue and educational work that Wildhaven provides the San Bernardino Mountains.”

Dr. Hugh Bialecki, a local Lake Arrowhead dentist and a member of the Rotary Club of Lake Arrowhead has been jumping for 10 years raising funds for the Blue Jay Jazz Foundation.

Local acupuncturist Lucas Hausler, a first-time participant, is also jumping for Blue Jay Jazz Foundation.

“This year I will jump as Elvis,” said Past Rotary District Governor Joe Ramos. “I believe in contributing time and money into an organization that improves my community. This is just one way I can help so please make a tax-deductible donation of any amount to the Lake Arrowhead Rotary Foundation.”

Ramos is a full-time Lake Arrowhead resident, past president and member of the Lake Arrowhead Rotary Club. He was also the chair for Rotary Rose Parade two years ago. In fact, Ramos was getting ready for his jump and went to check out the lake temperature last week. He is jumping for Lake Arrowhead Rotary Foundation.

As always, there will be a costume contest for all the jumpers. The primary judge is Sondra Hughes from Sondra’s Wild Sophistication.

PolaRotary Plunge will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020 at the beach at the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa which is located adjacent to the Lake Arrowhead Village.

There is no admission cost to PolaRotary Plunge as a spectator. Everyone is welcome!
