Daniel L. Carlson, 21, a native of Running Springs, died in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, on Nov. 9 while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
The announcement, released by the Department of Defense on Nov. 11, said the death was not combat related and details are under investigation.
Spc. Carlson joined the Army on Feb. 4, 2010, and attended basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. He joined the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade in September 2010.
He was based at Wheeler Army Airfield in Hawaii and served as a CH-47 Chinook helicopter repairer with the 3rd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment of the 25th CAB.
Spc. Carlson had been awarded the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal and an Aviator Badge.
“Our sincere condolences go out to Daniel’s family and friends, and we share in mourning their loss,” said Lt. Col. Derrick Cheng, spokesman for the 25th Infantry Division. “This is a tremendous tragedy, and they remain in our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.”
Spc. Carlson is survived by his parents and his wife.
