The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department participated in a second sex registrant operation between April 26 and May 18. Twin Peaks was among a dozen communities included in the effort to conduct compliance checks on registered sex offenders.

As an affiliate of the Los Angeles Crimes Against Children Task Force, the deputies participated in Operation Broken Heart, which is held in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Office and Delinquency Program. In addition, all 61 of the nation’s Internet Crimes Against Children task forces were included in the operation, which targets those who exploit children.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputies, California State Parole officers, and San Bernardino County Probation and Upland Police Department officers conducted compliance checks in Twin Peaks, Barstow, Chino Hills, Colorado River, Fontana, Grand Terrace, Loma Linda, Morongo, San Bernardino, Twenty-Nine Palms, Upland, Yucaipa and Yucca Valley.

The compliance process included verifying the home addresses of each registered sex offender. The operation involved 55 deputies, four parole agents, and 12 probation officers who conducted a total of 700 compliance checks of registered sex offenders.

As a result of the multi-agency participation in Operation Broken Heart, it was found that two sex registrants were deceased, one was in custody, and 14 have moved from their last registered address. A total of 20 were arrested for various charges.

Nationwide, more than 2,300 suspected online child sex offenders were arrested.
