@FirstResponder06482 - I don't think he meant it that way. He was probably speaking off the cuff to the reporter, but I interpreted what Captain Brumbaugh said differently.

What I "heard" in that statement was.... We lost lives that day because fire couldn't render immediate medical aid due to there being an active shooter on scene. With this new joint-department response, fireteams go in with LEOs as protection allowing them to save more lives.

With all due respect, San Bernardino County Fire Captain Spencer Brumbaugh is way off base if he really said that 26 children were killed in Sandy Hook before firefighters were "afraid to go inside and get shot."

    Wow. Just wow.

    Check your facts, Captain.

First, it was 20 children and six women who were brutally murdered that morning inside Sandy Hook Elementary School.

But more importantly, firefighters had no choice that morning. We were not, as you reportedly said, "afraid to go inside and get shot." We were not allowed near the building due to law enforcement protocol.

Local and state police, and others, kept us out of the building. Among those responding to the scene were at least two of our firefighters who had children in the building and even they had no say over entering that building. Plenty of others had relatives and close friends inside, as well.

That was a law enforcement/crime scene, sir, not a fireground. We had no say.

I really enjoyed this story until I hit that penultimate paragraph. What an uninformed slap in the face.
