On Tuesday, Dec. 17, the Rim of the World High School girls basketball team hosted the San Gorgonio High School Spartans in a thrilling season opener.

The Rim Ladies basketball came out strong in the first two minutes of play, taking command with a five-point lead. Senior Rebecca Roecker scored three of seven points for the first period, setting the pace for the game.

Although the Lady Scots out-scored the Spartans and kept a small lead for three periods of play, the real story was during the fourth period.

With just two and a half minutes of play left in the game, the Spartans took the lead by one point. Marina Almaraz stole the ball and drove down the court for two points, tying the game 31-31.

With under 39 seconds left in the game, Liberty Mills was hammered under the basket and a technical foul called. Liberty, visibly shaken up, composed herself, went to the free-throw line, and neatly made two points, giving Rim a four-point lead. The final score was Lady Scots, 35, Spartans, 31.

It is fitting that Liberty Mills, after getting pounded on the court, ran out the clock with just 19 seconds left in the game, giving the Lady Scots their first league victory of the season!

Winter break begins on Friday, Dec. 20, so the next home game will be against Eisenhower High School on Jan. 14 at 5 p.m. in the gym.
