Labor Day is bittersweet at the Lake Arrowhead Yacht Club. We have been racing an entire season, from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and now the club closes up and will wait for another year of sailing and comradery.

If you saw some sailboats on the water this over Labor Day weekend, either they were local individuals enjoying a great afternoon sail, or they were part of our novice fleet, which sailed a race on Saturday afternoon.

At the end of each season, we have new sailors try their hand at sailing and seasoned ones experience boats they have not been on before. The results from these races are posted below.

As part of our closing ceremonies, there is also a fleet review. Around 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1, a spectacle of boats paraded in front of the Lake Arrowhead Queen where they were judged based on several criteria, including the theme of “summer of fun.” The parade was sponsored by the sailing fleets and community organization.

All of us who had the privilege of sailing this summer want to thank everyone that made it possible, including the members of the Arrowhead Lake Association and race committee. We’d also like to thank the numerous chase boats and volunteers that worked to make the races fun, safe and special, as well as the boaters that allowed us to sail safely in the afternoon.

There will be one last sailing event on the lake on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8. Hobie Cat Fleet 434 is sponsoring the 15th Annual Lake Arrowhead Hobie Cat Regatta. It is typical to see 25 to 30 colorful sails on the lake during the afternoon as we sail. This is a Hobie-sanctioned event, so it is worth points for those racers looking to keep up their national rankings. If you are in the area, the sailing starts around 1:30 p.m. and goes until around 4:40 p.m. on both days. See you at the lake!
