The first preseason game of the year was on Thursday, Aug. 29, against Excelsior Charter School from Victorville. The Rim of the World High School football team came out tough, scoring their first touchdown in the first two minutes of the first quarter.

Philip Smith was able to thread the needle as the offensive line broke holes in the Excelsior defensive line, resulting in a touchdown. With the extra kick from Jorge Salvaterria, who has never played football before, Rim took an impressive quick lead with a score of 7-0.

A major part of the Fighting Scots success was their battering ram of an offensive line. The offense was made up of Nate Maier, Tyler Hernandez, Jonathan Walker, Braden Davis and Noble Romero. They were responsible for creating cracks in the opposing defensive line that allowed Phillip Smith to score four touchdowns and Luke Miller to score three touchdowns. Rounding out the offensive strategy was CJ King and Davin Whitaker with one touchdown each.  Adding to the arsenal was the great foot works from Jorge Salvaterria, who kicked seven field goals against Excelsior.

The running game has always been the mainstay of the Fighting Scots and this year was no disappointment. Owen Kelly ran for a total of 159 yards, with an average of 13 yards per play, giving the Fighting Scots several first downs. Another exciting addition to the offensive strategy was to see the effective introduction of the pass play. Quarterback Brock Chapman threw a three-yard pass to Luke Miller and a 22-yard pass to Davin Whitaker for a total of 25 yards. The diversity of offensive plays from the Rim offense kept the Excelsior Eagles stymied and overwhelmed.

Football is not all about the touchdowns though. The defensive line was able to keep the Eagles attack under control and even pushed them back for major losses. Nate Maier had seven solo tackles and Austin Shoopman had seven solo tackles with two assists, pushing the Excelsior offensive to give up valuable ground and giving the Fighting Scots great field position.

When forth quarter was over, the score was Rim of the World Fighting Scots 61 and Excelsior Eagles 0.

Come out and support the Fighting Scots this Friday, Sept. 6, as they host the Boron Bobcats at Townsend Stadium. The game starts at 7 p.m. and there’s predictions of great weather.
