On Friday, Dec. 20, the Rim of the World High School basketball team hosted the Montclair High School Cavaliers in what continues to be a challenging season.

The game started out fairly evenly, with both teams scoring baskets, but the Montclair team went to a full-court press as the Scots tried to take the ball down the court. The pressure was too much for the Scots. As they passed the ball or tried to take the ball down the court, the Cavaliers would steal the ball and turn Rim’s error into points. The first period of play, in which Montclair overwhelmed the Scots, finished with a score of Montclair, 32, Rim of the World, 14.

With Montclair’s solid lead in the game, they could afford to slow down the pace. The second period saw Rim outscoring Montclair by one point, but they were still far behind the Cavaliers, finishing the first half of play at Montclair, 48, Fighting Scots, 31.

The second half was much like the first: Montclair dominating again with a full-court press. The final score of the game was Montclair, 82, Rim, 50.

Rim’s top scorers included Gianni Navarro with 21 points, Austin Shoopman with eight points, Noah Mendis with seven points, Austin O’Kelly with five points, and Shane Caywood, Jason Sherman, Jack Wootten and Jeromy “Tabba” Marquez all scoring two points each.

Winter break is upon all of Rim’s winter sports teams and first-semester final exams are now behind them. As everyone is enjoying the holidays and looking forward to 2020, remember the hard work, both on the court or field and in the classroom, that these young men and women do so they can represent Rim of the World High School. Happy Holidays and a great New Year to all!
