On Friday, Oct. 25, the Rim of the World High School football team traveled down the mountain to take on the Rialto High School Knights in a must-win situation. The last three losses Rim football suffered served to challenge them in the game against Rialto.

As Rialto kicked off the ball, Austin Shoopman caught it and ran it to the 50-yard line, setting up a great field position for the Fighting Scots. In the next play, the Rim defense plowed a hole through the Rialto defense and Luke Miller ran the ball down to Rialto’s 18-yard line. During the following play, quarterback Brock Chapman threw a pass to Miller for a touchdown and Jorge Salvatierra kicked the extra point.

After only eight minutes of play, the score was Fighting Scots, 7 and Rialto Knights, 0. The Fighting Scots’ powerful defense stopped the Knights dead in their tracks, allowing Rim to take possession of the ball on their own 36-yard line. In the next play, Shoopman ran the ball for a touchdown. With the extra kick from Salvatierra, the score at the end of the first quarter was Rim, 13, Rialto, 0.

During the second quarter, Salvatierra kicked a 32-yard field goal, adding three more points to the score. In another series of plays during the second quarter, Miller intercepted a pass from the Rialto Knights that gave great field position to the Fighting Scots. With Rim in possession of the ball, Chapman threw a long pass to Miller, moving the ball to Rialto’s 28-yard line.

By using their diverse and practiced offense, the Fighting Scots had some momentum going. Chapman threw another pass to CJ King for another touchdown and Salvatierra kicked for the extra point. The first half ended with a score of, Fighting Scots, 24, and Rialto Knights, 0.

The second half started out with Rim kicking the ball to Rialto. Two minutes later, Shoopman recovered a fumble to return the ball for a touchdown and the extra point from Jorge Salvatierra put the score at Rim, 31, Rialto, 0. In another series of plays, Phillip Smith had a 10-yard run, then a 7-yard play for two more touchdowns. Salvatierra again made the extra point in two separate plays. The game ended with a final score of Fighting Scots, 45, Rialto Knights, 0.

The Fighting Scots were successful in using a variety of offensive plays and their strong defense stopping the Rialto Knights’ offense cold.

The final home game is on Friday, Nov. 1. Arroyo Valley High School will be coming up to the Scots’ home field. Come early as the seniors and their families will be recognized for their dedication and hard work. Ceremonies will begin at 5:30 p.m.
