Rim Wrestling’s Varsity Team gave up 3 of 14 weight classes going into their season opener vs Eisenhower Wednesday night, Jan. 15. However, Rim turned the challenge into an opportunity and made a major statement at home on Senior Night.

At 5 p.m., in Rim High School’s gym, spectators filled the stands and cheered on their home team and the six seniors recognized prior to the first match of the evening. Brock Chapman, Jacob Gregson Smith, Esau Jones, Joshua Negron, Evan Steenson, and Eli Weisz were escorted by family and friends and acknowledged at the last home duel of their high school careers.

The Scots took care of business with the first varsity matchup at the 160-pound weight class. Junior, Clayton Musgeave pinned Eisenhower’s Richard Acosta, in the first period, setting the stage for the Scots, posting their first six team points. Junior Noah Sosa (170 pounds) pinned his opponent in the first period, as the excitement in the gym escalated. Rim gave up the 182-pound weight class followed by a double forfeit at 195 pounds which brought the score to 12-6, Rim.

Senior Evan Steenson took the 220-pound weight class forfeit from Eisenhower and added another 6 points to the board. Heavyweight Sophomore Nate Maier pummeled Joshua Secaida with a pin in the second period. Freshman Chase Hopkins pulled through for the Scots as he battled deep into the third period and surprised Eisenhower’s Julio Rubio with a late pin with one second to go on the clock, winning the 106-pound weight class.

Freshman Cody South (120 pounds), senior Jacob Gregson Smith (139 pounds) and junior Barrett Ochoa (138 pounds) also pinned their opponents. Rim pulled away from Eisenhower with a 48-18 lead.

To put the final exclamation point on the Scots’ win, during the final matchup of the night, captain and senior Brock Chapman (145 pounds) did not disappoint the crowd with his 12-second pin over Luis Pena Neyra of Eisenhower. The crowd erupted and the Rim Wrestling team and supporters celebrated a 54-24 victory over Eisenhower.
