So why do high school students play extracurricular sports? From our Rim students’ perspective, it is because they love their sport, the competition and challenge to go against another player or team, and to strive to do one’s best.  It takes courage to play any sport, to have the resolution to go out on the court and play a game wherein the best case you win and in the worst case you can lose, and lose in a big way!  The Lady Scots Basketball team struggled as they hosted Eisenhower on Tuesday, Jan. 14, and other than the official record book that showed that Eisenhower won, this game was about the courage of the Lady Scots Basketball team as they were overwhelmed by Eisenhower.

After the game, I spoke with Liberty Mills and asked her where the team was after the first period was over.

“We are intimidated and that [we] do not believe in [our]selves. Personally, I didn’t think we were going to win this game and I need to start thinking more positively,”  she responded.

I followed up with the question, “Why do you play?” Liberty’s response is what I expected, “Because I love the game.”

Why our students at Rim or any other group of students play sports, is also about their love and passion for their sport and not because of a statistic in a record book or so that they can become the best. As a community, we need to support our teams at Rim of the World High School; we need to be at the games and cheer them on and let our students know we are there to support them. You can do this on Tuesday, Jan. 28 as they host Jurupa Hills at 5 p.m., the final home game of the season. We will be recognizing the seniors in the last home game of their high school career.
