The first league game, on Tuesday, Dec. 17, brought frustration to the Rim of the World High School basketball team as they lost to the San Gorgonio High School Spartans. The Spartans took a seven-point lead in the first two minutes of the game as Rim repeatedly turned the ball over and the Spartans capitalized on their errors.

When the first period was over, the score was San Gorgonio, 18, Rim, 8. The remainder of the game was much like the first period in which the Spartans dominated the play and walked away with the game. The final score was Spartans, 76, Rim, 34.

As hard as the Fighting Scots basketball team played, the Spartans were overpowering and out-played the Fighting Scots team. It was apparent the Rim players were frustrated by the numerous turnovers and yet there were times when it all clicked and came together for just moments. The crowd cheered as Gianni Navarro nailed a three-pointer in the first period and when Noah Mendis drilled a three-pointer in the second period.

How the Fighting Scots basketball team played against San Gorgonio reflected the character of the team. As frustrated as the team may have been, they played hard and did not give up. Most importantly, they did not take their frustration out on the Spartans.

Austin Shoopman led with eight points, followed by Darin Needham and Luke Peterson with five points each, and Gianni Navarro with four points. Jeromy Marquez, Austin O’Kelly, Jason Sherman, CJ King and Merrick Zweber all scored two points each.

For a great evening, come out and support the Fighting Scots Basketball team at their next home game against Montclair High School on Dec. 20 at 5 p.m. Afterward, show your support for our local food establishments by having dinner at one of your favorite dining places. Happy Holidays to all!
