This has been a great year for the Lady Scots’ basketball team. Why? Because they are playing with intensity and with heart, that’s why!

For the last couple of games, the Rim girls’ basketball team has come out scrapping and has been playing very aggressively against stronger teams. Coach Jordan has done a great job of turning the Ladies into a scrappy, competitive team that will not allow admittedly stronger teams to just roll over them.

The girls went up against Rialto on Jan. 30, and the first quarter was a well-rounded attack from the starting lineup. The first score was a three-pointer from Ashlee Hosking, followed by Shelby Avila with two baskets for four points and Liberty Mills, Katelyn Reyes and Mariana Mejia, all with two points, finishing the first quarter with a five-point lead.

In the second quarter, Rialto began its surge and narrowed the Rim girls’ lead to four, with a halftime score of 26 to 22.

As the second half began, Rialto kept chipping away at Rim’s lead and, as the fourth quarter got underway, the intensity of the crowd as well as the play on the court grew. With only two minutes left, Rialto tied the game and, with Rim missing two key opportunities against a tough Rialto defense, Rialto was able to take the lead.

Shelby fouled a Rialto player, drawing a free throw shot, which returned the ball to the Lady Scots with only 28 seconds left in the game. Unfortunately, they were not able to score, as the buzzer sounded, ending the game with a final score of Rim, 49, Rialto, 50.

Both Katelyn and Blanca Lorea came out with two buckets each, Mariana was held to seven points, Brooke Erber came home with nine points, Liberty with 11 points, Ashlee with 12 points and Shelby finished off with 14 points, making this a great effort for these players who performed with all their hearts!
