On Thursday, Oct. 24, the Rim of the World High School girls volleyball team hosted the Redlands High School Terriers in the first round of CIF playoffs.

As the match got underway, the Lady Scots looked comfortable on the court, quickly jumping ahead with a three-point lead. Redlands kept within striking distance throughout the first set, which kept the Lady Scots on their toes as Rim won the first set, 25-22.

During the second set, the Lady Scots took the lead again; this time with a series of power plays and putting the Terriers back on their haunches! The Redlands coach called several timeouts before she eventually got the Terriers back into the game. At that point, Rim had a commanding lead and won the second set, 25-17.

The third set changed as the Redlands Terriers came out hard and taking a quick, five-point lead.  Redlands changed their tactics by using the dink, where they used a soft touch to push the ball through or over the Rim blockers. Rim was able to make some adjustments, but it looked like the Terriers would take a commanding lead.

When the score reached Terriers, 20, Rim, 13, it looked like the Terriers’ commanding lead would force a fourth set. However, following a timeout for Rim, where we do not know what was said, the Lady Scots seemed to declare that this set was not over.

One aspect of true sportsmanship is when an individual athlete or a team can take command of a losing game and overcome a significant lead. The Lady Scots came back from the timeout and proceeded to tie the set, 22-22. Then, Maddy Gabera scored another point, giving the Scots the lead for the first time in the third set. Rim was now poised to possibly win the third set!

In the stands, Rim fans were screaming. Meanwhile, Redlands Terriers were standing and cheering their teammates on. Then Rim scored their 24th point and the ball was passed to Danielle McCassland. With only one point needed for a win, McCassland pounded the ball for the final point. The final score was Lady Scots, 25, Terriers, 22. This gave Rim the win of the match at 3-0.

On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Lady Scots traveled for their second round of CIF playoff and went up against the Windward High School Wildcats. The final score was Wildcats, 3, Lady Scots, 1. This loss ended the season for Rim girls volleyball.

The Lady Scots volleyball team has a rich legacy. With Kyle Pattison as head coach, he has demonstrated that he has what it takes to coach the girls to a 10-0 league record, extending and building on that legacy. For the Ladies on the volleyball team: a job well done. You should be proud of what you accomplished this year!
