Ex-School Worker Pleads to Sex Charge

Sentencing is scheduled for June 1 for a former Rim school district maintenance man who pleaded no contest on April 5 to a felony charge of unlawful sex with a minor.

Douglas Keith Gosnell II, 38, entered his plea at a disposition hearing before Judge Steve C. Malone. He remains free on bail pending his sentencing.

Gosnell was arrested Aug. 12, 2014, at Rim High School after authorities received information that he had partially or fully nude images of underage girls stored on his cell phone.

Six days after his arrest Gosnell was charged with two felonies—possession and control of child pornography and unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. Under a plea bargain Gosnell pleaded to the latter charge, which under California law could result in a state prison term of two, three or four years.

It was not immediately clear what the disposition of the pornography charge might be. It is common in plea-bargain agreements for charges other than those to which pleas are entered to be dismissed at the time the defendant is sentenced.

Following Gosnell’s arrest Ed Dardenna-Ankringa, the Rim district’s former assistant superintendent, told this newspaper Gosnell is a substitute employee who, though not specifically assigned to work at the high school, could be assigned to work at various campuses when the need arose.

Dardenna-Ankringa said the district “took immediate and prudent action” when it learned of his arrest, though because it was a personnel matter he would not specify what the action was.

Larry King, the man who replaced Dardenna-Ankringa, confirmed that Gosnell has not worked for the school district since charges were filed against him.

Details were not available about the charge to which Gosnell pleaded.
